Organisational Connectivity: Summary, fotos, opinion poll results

Why organisational connectivity?
(Leveraging the Science of Human Networks)

The nature of relationships and patterns of interactions existing among employees of a company and management greatly influences how work is actually getting done and shows to what degree the work environment is being inclusive or not. Quite often a traditional organisational chart has little to do with the degree of connectivity within a company. Through Organisational Connectivity it is possible to find out where critical breakdowns in the relationships between individuals or groups are likely to happen. Organisational connectivity helps companies determine how far they are pursuing a good gender, generational and racial inclusiveness in their leadership strategies.

Christian Baldia recently presented his concept of organisational connectivity to a wide and diversified European and international audience during the first World Diversity LeadershipSummit - Europe in March 2010 in Vienna, Austria. Many WDLS-EU 2010 attendees have since then expressed their wish to have an in depth session on this very innovative management tool.

Organisational Connectivity is the ideal advanced training session for companies, diversity experts, policy and decisionmakers, diversity practitioners and all other stakeholders determined to promote Diversity and Inclusion!

Short Summary of WDLS-EU Special Session “Organisational Connectivity”

The much asked for Special in-depth Session on „Organisational Connectivity” with Christian
Baldia
took place from 30th September -1st October 2010 at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce
and Industry
in Vienna, Austria.

The major issues dealt with during the seminar included:
• Organisational Connectivity as a new framework for understanding and managing inclusion
and diversity
• An Organisational Connectivity approach to leadership
• Building and enhancing the most critical human networks at your non-profit and profit-driven
organisations
• Using the Organisational Connectivity framework to drive collaboration, productivity and
innovation in an organisation

Target groups of the session
were CEOs, diversity experts and practitioners, HR and CSR managers, diversity trainers and coaches, organisational development specialists and anyone interested in diversity and inclusion.
Attendees came from three different countries, Austria, Germany and Slovakia and included representatives from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, from OMV Gas and Oil Production, from the British Council, from the European Central Bank, from the Austrian Red Cross and CEOs of various Diversity and Consulting companies.
The first day focused on an in-depth introduction on what Organisational Connectivity is and how it can be used as a new framework for understanding and managing inclusion and diversity.
Organisational Connectivity or Social Network Analysis additionally uncovers the patterns of interaction and collaboration between individuals. Organisational Connectivity offers information that does not appear on a traditional organisation chart, but it provides highly useful details about group interrelationships and how work actually gets done.
The second day mainly saw the active participation of attendees, who were divided into groups and received exercises to do in order to gain a completely new perspective and understanding of their own work environment and work or social network. Furthermore questions were directly and caseorientedly answered by the expert, Mr Baldia.

WDLS-EU Opinion Poll Results

Feedback form Organisational Connectivity
with Christian Baldia, Vienna  30th September- 1st October

All (100%) of the Organisational Connectivity participants found the Special Session on Organisational Connectivity by Christian Baldia very interesting.

All organisational Connectivity attendees (100%) confirmed they would recommend the speaker and Organisational Connectivity to other stakeholders in this field.

93% of participants found that the topics dealt with were useful and practice-oriented.

93% of participants said they would like to receive more information and newsletters in the future on similar events.

Further suggestions/comments to improve future seminars
·         Questions and the workshop-style of the session on the 2nd day was very useful
·         It would be necessary to involve more company leaders in such events.
·         Austria i.e. Vienna is blessed by the presence of UN Organisations. This type of topic on diversity should be extended to them. It would be good to extend invitation and participation to the UN Human Resource units.

Austrian WDLS-EU Steering Committee Delegation left Boston to Washington DC

WDLS-EU Delegation at the Fairmont Hotel in Boston

After an amazing and very inspiring WDLS 2010 at the Harvard Medical School, the Austrian WDLS-EU Steering Committee Delegation left Boston to Washington DC on Thursday morning.

Austrian Deputy Ambassador welcoming
Austrian-American Diversity Think Tank Talks
in Washington DC
Upon arrival in Washington the Delegation was received and warmly welcomed by the Austrian Minister, Deputy Chief of Mission Andreas Riecken and Alice Irvin, Director of the Press and Information Service at the Austrian Embassy in Washington DC.

Over 15 US leading Diversity Think Tanks and executives based in DC and New York, including Sherry Snipes (AIA), Christian Baldia (Constellation SAS), Liz Mcgillivray (ORC), Tanya Odom (The future of work) joined the Austrian delegation at the Embassy for two sessions of highly reflective exchanges of experiences, good practices, challenges and trends of Diversity and Inclusion from a European/Austrian and American perspectives.

Think Tank reception
at the Austrian Embassy
Both groups acknowledged the importance of such exchanges and the enormous learning process it offers. Both groups agreed on the different approaches of D&I between Europe/Austria and the US. Meetings such as ours offer great learning opportunities for both contexts. It was therefore agreed that these round of exchanges need to be continued.

A rich exchange of experiences,
best and worst practices and
a discussion about current trends,
challenges and expectations
The Austrian Embassy in DC showed great interest in facilitating future Think Tank exchanges. Achaleke, initiator and leader of the delegation committed herself to making sure that this kind of exchanges become an integral part of WDLS-EU and that future Think Tank meetings reach out to many more communities.

Join me to celebrate the diversity of thoughts and of differences!
It is about me,
It is about you,
It is all about us!
Don’t let it pass you by!

Today, Thursday morning the delegation members will meeting Congressman Hastings in Capitol for further exchanges. Congressman Hastings represents his native state of Florida by serving as Congressman for District 23, which includes parts of Broward, Palm Beach, Hendry, Martin, and St. Lucie Counties. Among Congress' most respected voices in international affairs, Congressman Hastings is the Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe.  Commonly referred to as the Helsinki Commission, this independent U.S. government agency was created in 1976 to monitor and encourage compliance with the landmark human rights and democracy-building treaty signed in Finland the previous year.In 2007, Congressman Hastings became the first African-American to chair the Commission and continues his work in the areas of human rights, economic development and parliamentary diplomacy.

Thereafter Achaleke is very much looking forward to taking part in talks at the Howard University DC, the first ever Black University in DC.

Log in tomorrow for further updates of today’s events as they unfold!

News from WDLS Boston 2010

Some food for thoughts from high ranking panellists to ensure  engagement, productivity and innovation in a modern working environment.

  • Find out what is going on in your working environment/company
  • Have a diversity vision
  • Be able to connect with the world
  • Benchmark where you and your organization are, find out where you are going to and where we want to be
  • Know what you expect from leaders and colleagues and see to it that you are on the right path, and do this on a regular basis
  • Adopt a generation-wise approach by finding out how people change in your company over the years
  • Find out how a good leader should look like

How inclusive is your working environment? Here are some guarding questions

  • What are the critical norms a global company? How should it look at?
  • How are you and your organization dealing with cultural norms?
  • How inclusive is the thinking about cultural diversity in a culturally inclusive environment?
  • What tools do we offer for customer support and how does this transform into visible benefits?
  • How do we treat our customers in a globalised marketplace and in different environments?
  • And with different backgrounds and cultures?

some thoughtful perceptions of diversity!

Diversity is .....

  • like finding an unexpected profit, like the money you can find on the sidewalk.
  • It is a way to drive revenue and profit through identifying untapped opportunities
  • having the right to be different!
  • finding ways to drive innovation and profitability
  • customising engagement for different employees, find the right tools, being technically competitive, creating good working environments and management development strategies.
  • the making of and consideration of differences
  • breaking through the glass ceiling not embracing or caressing it
  • having the right to be different (Norbert Pauser, member of the Austrian delegation)
